Political Science. Journalism. Digital Marketing.

I don’t necessarily wear politics on my sleeve, but I do find politics in everything — even fashion. As a political science student, I am fascinated by how culture influences or manifests broader political trends.

I began last summer interning on Capitol Hill. My stint ended less than 24 hours after the Senate passed historic gun legislation and only hours after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. My second act of the summer took me from Capitol Hill to a literal landfill, and I worked as a garbage collector. The Russell Senate Offices and the dump’s break room were worlds apart, but the nature of the work was oddly similar. I woke up at 5:30am to start press clips only to then wake up at 5:30am to start trash pick-up before dawn. The difference was the dress code. On the trash truck, I sported a neon yellow jersey and was advised that “whatever you wear might look different at the end of the day.” In D.C., my office kept things strict. Jacket and tie for men. A 21-year-old with a limited professional closet, I resorted to mixing and matching slacks with blazers. I chose statement socks and ties, trying hard to avoid becoming an outfit repeater. Although it’s a very buttoned-up town, D.C.-types quietly rely on fashion to craft their brand. Thom Browne’s looks have made their way into moments like Katy Perry’s dramatic white cape dress at the 2020 inauguration or Michelle Obama pairing her 2012 inaugural gown by Thom Browne with an affordable belt from J Crew. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s strong suits and choice socks prove that world leaders can dress confidently without taking themselves too seriously.

Both this course and the Thom Browne label encapsulate the pervasive nature of fashion. Beyond the runway, daring designs challenge how we perceive others and choose the clothes we picture on ourselves. Whether I end up working in government, fashion, or somewhere in between, I will need at least one more strong suit to truly express myself.
