CJ Rodgers: Sculpture Portfolio

"I’ve been approaching my work like how a decorator crab adds to their bodies pieces of algae, sponges, and shells. Forms, patterns, and ideas I find beautiful and compelling are organized and integrated into my sculptures—similar to how I would organize elements in slides when I used to study Finance. For example, my eye was caught by the Coptic textiles I was researching, which led me to learn how to weave to connect with these ancient makers and celebrate their beauty. For this series, I was drawn by these textiles, the human form and its similarities to the animal form, repetition, as well as self-expression through means like clothing, shoes, jewelry, nail polish, and other held or worn objects. I was inspired by Thom Browne’s intuitive process, focus on pushing craftsmanship, and refraining from providing explicit meaning to allow others to experience the work in a more bottom up way and derive their own readings."
